Facial & Body Hair Growth in Women: What’s Normal, What’s Not, and When to Consider Laser

By Dr. Sheel Desai Solomon, MD, FAAD Unwanted hair on the face and body is one of the most common and most upsetting concerns I see in my female patients.

Upper lip. Chin. Jawline. Neck. Chest. Abdomen. If you’ve found yourself thinking, “Is this normal?”, you’re not alone. Thank heavens there are very effective, medically sound ways to manage it, often permanently.

Why Hair Growth Increases (Face & Body)

Hair follicles in areas like the chin, jawline, chest, and lower abdomen are especially sensitive to hormones, particularly androgens.

1. Puberty: Turning on the Follicles

During puberty:

  • Hormones convert fine, light hairs into coarser, darker terminal hairs

  • Common areas affected:

    • Upper lip

    • Sideburns

    • Chin and jawline

    • Arms and legs

This is normal, but the degree varies widely by genetics.

2. Pregnancy: Temporary but Noticeable Changes

During pregnancy:

  • Hormonal shifts can stimulate new or thicker hair growth

  • Common areas:

    • Face (especially chin/upper lip)

    • Abdomen (the “linea nigra” area)

    • Breasts

Many women notice faster regrowth or denser hair.

➡️ In most cases, this improves within 6–12 months postpartum, though some hair may persist.

3. When Hair Growth Signals Something More

If facial or body hair becomes:

  • Coarse, dark, and increasing over time

  • Located in a male-pattern distribution (chin, chest, midline abdomen)

  • Associated with acne or irregular periods

We consider hirsutism.

One of the most common causes:

  • PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) — affects up to 10% of women

This doesn’t mean something is “wrong”, but it does mean we should evaluate hormones and tailor your treatment.

Common Areas Women Seek Treatment

In practice, the most requested areas are:

  • Upper lip

  • Chin

  • Jawline/neck

  • Sideburns

  • Chest

  • Lower abdomen

  • Bikini line

These are hormonally responsive zones and often the most frustrating.

Hair Removal Options: What Actually Works

By the time I see patients, most women have tried everything over the counter.

Temporary Methods

  • Shaving

  • Waxing

  • Threading

  • Depilatory creams

These are fine. but quite literally, temporary.

  • Require constant upkeep

  • Can cause irritation, ingrown hair, and skin darkening.

Medical Treatments (When Needed)

For hormonally driven hair:

  • Prescription creams (e.g., to slow facial hair growth)

  • Hormonal therapies (in select cases)

These reduce growth, but don’t remove existing hair permanently.

When to Consider Laser Hair Removal

This is where things change.

Laser hair removal is the most effective long-term reduction method we have.

Ideal Candidates

You’re a good candidate if:

  • You have dark, coarse hair (laser targets pigment)

  • You’re tired of constant shaving/waxing

  • You get ingrown hairs or irritation

  • Hair growth is persistent (not just temporary pregnancy-related)

Areas That Respond Best

Laser works especially well on:

  • Chin and jawline

  • Underarms

  • Bikini line

  • Lower abdomen

  • Legs

Facial areas respond well—but may require maintenance due to hormonal influence.

What to Expect

  • Typically 6–8 sessions, spaced several weeks apart

  • Targets hair in the active growth phase

  • Results in permanent reduction, not 100% removal

Most patients see:

  • Thinner, lighter regrowth

  • Slower growth cycles

  • Dramatic reduction in maintenance

When NOT to Rush Into Laser

  • During pregnancy (we usually encourage waiting)

  • If hair growth started suddenly and rapidly → evaluate hormones first

  • Very light/blonde hair (laser is less effective as it needs to see pigment)

A Dermatologist’s Evaluation:

Here’s the nuance:

  • Puberty-related hair: often stable, treat based on preference

  • Pregnancy-related hair: often temporary, reassess postpartum

  • Progressive facial hair (chin/jawline) : evaluate for hormonal causes

Laser is not just cosmetic—it can significantly improve:

  • Skin irritation

  • Ingrown hairs

  • Daily quality of life

Final Thought

Unwanted facial and body hair is common—but that doesn’t mean you have to live with it.

The key is understanding:

  • Why it’s happening

  • Whether it’s temporary or hormonal

  • Which treatment makes sense for you

And when appropriate, laser hair removal can be one of the most liberating, low-maintenance solutions we offer.
