Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Treatment & Microneedling

PRP therapy has rapidly become one of the most sought-after non-surgical procedures for facial and skin rejuvenation in the world. PRP is a concentrated blood plasma that is enriched with platelets, containing potent growth factors along with key chemicals that stimulate healing and rejuvenation.

Should you decide to have this treatment a small amount of blood will be drawn from you in our comfortable offices.  The platelet-rich plasma is separated from the patient’s blood with our best in class centrifuge, and then applied to the treated area, causing a release of growth factors in the deeper skin layers, which, in turn, triggers stem cells to produce new collagen, blood vessels, and skin cells. Currently there are several PRP systems commercially marketed, which facilitate preparation of ready-to-apply platelet-rich suspensions.

When considering a rejuvenating procedure enhanced by PRP, it is critical to know the equipment used for PRP preparation, as it is one of the deciding factors for the efficacy of the treatment and results you can expect to see. The widely considered best-in-class PureSpin™ PRP system, which we use at Preston  Dermatology & Skin Surgery Center has been selected after an extensive research and testing of various top-of-the-line systems. It is the most efficient PRP system in the current market, far superior to its nearest competition.

Treatment

PRP Microneedling is an FDA-Approved electronic fractional device that is used to rejuvenate the skin and improve the skin surface by reducing fine lines, expression lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores, and acne scars. It is also an innovative treatment for hair loss. The concept of microneedling is based on the skin’s natural ability to repair itself after a physical injury.

What to Expect During the Procedure

First, a numbing cream is applied to the area that will be treated. Next, a small amount of the patient's blood is drawn. The Plasma is separated from the blood to concentrate the healing properties, this is what makes up the PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma). As the sterile, disposable tip of the microneedling device moves across the skin, it makes pinpoint punctures to create micro-injuries, and the PRP is applied. The process stimulates collagen formation and provides a clear channel for PRP to be absorbed through the skin. The procedure typically takes 45-60 minutes from start to finish.

Patients Who Should Not Be Treated:

  • Patients with active acne or infection

  • Patients who scar easily, have a scarring disorder or connective tissue disease.

  • Patients who have undergone skin radiation in the last 12 months

  • Patients with HIV, HBV, or HCV

How many PRP treatments are needed for hair loss?

The amount of treatments needed depends on each patient’s needs and your provider’s treatment plan. We highly recommend a series of at least three-six sessions spaced four-six weeks apart for the very best results.

Is the treatment painful?

There may be some temporary discomfort during the injections/or Microneedling, and occasional redness and bruising immediately following the treatment that resolves quickly.

Are there any side effects?

There have been no known side effects reported to date. Some patients may experience some mild irritation, swelling, bruising, itching, discoloration or tenderness at the injection sites. These are temporary side effects and typically resolve within two-three days.

How long do the effects of PRP for hair loss last?

The longevity of the results of PRP treatments vary based on the extent of the procedure, areas treated, number of sessions.

Can someone be allergic to PRP?

There is virtually no risk of allergic reaction. In addition, no allergic reactions have been reported to date. Our PRP process is used to rapidly collect and isolate a patient’s own PRP for injection and contains no animal or synthetic products.
